Elergy

By Michelle Cioccoloni

Elegy is the result of visits to war cemeteries with their gravestones stretching endlessly, like landscapes, as far as the eye can see, a sharp reminder of the vastness of the losses in wars world-wide, the enormity of which is brought into sharp focus when one is confronted with wall after towering wall of lists of names of those missing in action and never found.  The photograph zooms in on names beginning with the letters WAR, its oblique angle giving a perspective of the towering height of such monuments and as the view fans out, blurring towards the edges, it hints at the "span as wide of Europe", Owen's own measure of the death toll.
