Greater Love

By Michelle Cioccoloni

From a distance the sacrificial stone appears to be made of marble, but closer to it is seen to be more fragile, as human life is. The crisp white surface is devoid of inscriptions, but is covered with many, many red poppies, poppies red as the "stained stones kissed by the ... dead", the young, a lost generation, who sacrificed their lives and who are beyond reach, "Weep, you may weep, for you may touch them not."
