There could be no more fitting setting for this event to mark Owen's enlistment in the Artists Rifles. The event begins with a reading of Owen's railway poem The Send-Off. There are three war memorials to the men of the Great Western and the London North Western railways- two are normally inaccessible to the public and one is little known. Wilfred Owen's father was the Asst Supt of the joint railway. By kind permission of Mr & Mrs Roger Norton of Mahim Monkmoor Road we shall be able to see Wilfred's attic room. At the old Shropshire & Montgomeryshire Railway the Shrewsbury Historic Railway Trust will tell the story of the railways and railwaymen in the war. They will show us exactly where the German PoWs tended their allotments growing their own food.
The walk will start and finish at Shrewsbiry train station.
